Opposite the Bastille Opera, the neighborhood seems an unusual location for the latest restaurant revamp by Parisian duo Gilbert and Thierry Costes who tend toward groovier arrondissments. But alas on land that once houses the famous prison, this stylish French brasserie is tucked behind a circular glass frontage that leads to a glamorous and visual space of geometric marble floors, deco-inspired furnishings and ceiling painted like a fresco sky. A series of two dining rooms penned by designed India Mahdavi include a secret passageway to the main bar with its turn-of-the-century brass detailing and dressy staff conducive to drinks post-ballet or opera.

The Food

Chef Jean-François Piege works a magical seasonal menu of springtime salad with mozzarella and avocado, steak tartare and burrata over a bed of fresh tomato. Additional entrees offer a classic Croque Monsieur, slow-cooked cod with asparagus and sirloin strip with pepper sauce.
